Founded in 1960, Capital Medical University (CMU) is a key medical higher education institution under the joint leadership of the People's Government of Beijing Municipality, the National Health Commission, and the Ministry of Education (MOE). The late founding President, Professor Wu Jieping, was a renowned urologist, an academician of both the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and a vice chairperson of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress.

CMU comprises 12 colleges, 2 research centers, and 23 clinical medical schools, of which 21 are affiliated hospitals. It also includes 41 clinical specialty colleges and departments and 40 clinical diagnosis and research centers. The university currently has 16,094 full-time students and 8,394 faculty members across the university and its affiliated hospitals. CMU offers bachelor's, master's, and doctoral programs, cultivating both academic and professional talents in medicine and related health sciences through a comprehensive, multi-level, and innovative training system.

CMU has several national and municipal key disciplines, among which clinical medicine, neuroscience and behavior, pharmacology, and toxicology have ranked among the top 1‰ in the global ESI list. With a strong research profile, CMU hosts multiple national and municipal key laboratories, research centers, and post-doctoral research workstations. CMU has undertaken more than 3,200 scientific research projects, including the National Key R&D Program of China, the National Science and Technology Major Project, projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the National Social Science Fund of China, the Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission, and the Beijing Municipal Natural Science Foundation. High-caliber national and municipal research and training centers and institutes are in place.

Guided by its motto, "Health, Society, Virtue, Ability", CMU adheres to the principles of medical education, embraces its social responsibilities, and is dedicated to becoming an innovative, research-oriented medical university.

Its new campus, strategically located in the northern expansion zone of the Daxing Biomedical Industry Base, will integrate the main campus, a research-oriented hospital, and the Capital Institute for Medical Research (Beijing).

The total land area of the main campus is approximately 1,100 mu (about 182 acres), to build an international first-class research-oriented medical university. The planning and design concept is defined as a "future medical college" that focuses on the integration of teaching and research, strengthens faculty-student interaction, and highlights the integration of disciplines.

The commencement of the new campus represents a significant strategic step in building a world-class research-oriented medical university. It aligns with the national strategy of relieving Beijing of functions non-essential to its role as the capital and supports the coordinated development of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region. It aims to create an innovation hub in southern Beijing, provide driving forces for the upgrading of the capital's medical and health industry, and contribute to the development of a Healthy Beijing and a Healthy China.
