The history of the University of Science and Technology Beijing (USTB) can be traced back to 1895, when the first mining and metallurgy discipline in modern China was established at Peiyang Western College. In 1952, USTB was formed by the merger of mining and metallurgy departments from six prestigious Chinese universities, including Tianjin University (formerly Peiyang University) and Tsinghua University, and was named Beijing Iron and Steel Institute. As the first university dedicated to the iron and steel industry in the People's Republic of China, it was renamed Beijing Institute of Iron and Steel and was approved as a national key higher education institution in 1960. In 1984, it became one of the first universities in China to officially establish a graduate school. In 1988, it adopted its current name, University of Science and Technology Beijing. In May 1997, USTB was among the first to be included in the national Project 211. In 2006, it became one of the first universities supported by the Innovation Platform for Dominant Disciplines of Project 985. In 2014, the "Collaborative Innovation Center of Steel Technology" was successfully selected into the national "2011 Plan". In 2017, USTB was listed as a national Double First-Class university. In 2018, the university was approved to be jointly established by the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense (SASTIND) and the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China. Currently, USTB has developed into a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China, focusing primarily on engineering and featuring coordinated development in multiple disciplines such as engineering, science, management, literature, economics, and law.
