Established on December 3, 1958, the Institute of Microbiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IMCAS) has, for over six decades, remained committed to its founding mission of fostering scientific innovation, serving the nation, and benefiting the people. It has witnessed the entire development of microbiology in China — from its inception to a world-class level — and has cultivated a distinguished tradition characterized by rigor and pragmatism, unity and collaboration, dedication and innovation, and a striving for excellence. Today, IMCAS stands as a leading research institution with strong comprehensive research strength and prominent academic influence in the field of microbiology.
The institute comprises six key research departments: Department of Microbial Resources and Biotechnology, Department of Mycology and Innovative Technologies, Department of Agricultural Microbiomics and Biotechnology, Department of Microbial Physiology and Metabolic Engineering, Department of Pathogenic Microbiology and Immunology, and Department of Microbiomics and Microecological Technology. In 2024, the National Key Laboratory of Microbial Diversity and Innovative Resource Utilization was approved and incorporated into the national key laboratory system.
Focusing on the core task of seizing the commanding heights in science and technology, IMCAS targets strategically significant microbial groups and critical areas in key fields, including in-depth exploration of microbial diversity and resources, as well as the prevention and control of key pathogen infections. The institute is dedicated to conducting forward-looking and strategic basic research as well as key technological research, striving to promote the discovery of new biological phenomena in microbiology, achieve breakthroughs in fundamental theories and key technologies, and drive the development of emerging industries - thereby making significant contributions to achieving high-level self-reliance and self-improvement in science and technology.
