Co-founded by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Ministry of Education (MOE), the National Center for Nanoscience and Technology, China (NCNST, hereinafter referred to as "the National Nano Center") was approved for establishment by the State Commission Office for Public Sector Reform (SCOPSR) in December 2003.

NCNST focuses on original basic research and transformative industrial technologies in nanoscience, with the goal of creating a world-class hub for nanoscience and technology innovation, talent development, and technology transfer and commercialization. In addition to supporting the advancement of China's nanoscience and technology, NCNST is dedicated to promoting the standardized and regulated development of the national nanoscience and technology industry, contributing to the sound and orderly progress of China's nanoscience and technology field. The center actively engages in domestic and international scientific and technological cooperation and exchanges, integrates into the global innovation network, and strives to build a world-class research institution.

Currently, NCNST operates six laboratories: the Laboratory of Nano-Biological Effects and Safety, the Laboratory of Nano Standards and Measurement, the Laboratory of Nanosystems and Hierarchical Fabrication, the Laboratory of Nanoscience and Artificial Intelligence, the Nanofabrication Laboratory, and the Laboratory of Nano-Intelligent Sensing. Additionally, it has established the Nanotechnology Development Department, which is committed to creating a public, open platform to support nanoscience and technology research. This department mainly focuses on nano-detection technology services and conducts relevant training, research, and development.
