Beijing University of Technology (BJUT), founded in 1960, is a key municipal multidisciplinary university with a strong focus on engineering. It offers programs across nine academic disciplines: engineering, science, economics, management, literature, law, education, art, and interdisciplinary studies.

In 1981, BJUT was among the first institutions in China authorized by the Ministry of Education to confer master's degrees, and in 1985, it was granted the authority to confer doctoral degrees. In 1996, it was included in China's "Project 211", joining a group of universities prioritized for national development in the 21st century.

In 2017, BJUT was selected for China's "World-Class Discipline Construction Plan". In 2022, it successfully passed the first-round evaluation and entered the second round of the "Double First-Class" initiative.

Nine disciplines at BJUT are ranked among the top 500 in the QS World University Rankings by Subject. Eleven disciplines—including engineering, materials science, chemistry, environmental science and ecology, computer science, biology and biochemistry, social sciences, physics, geosciences, clinical medicine, and mathematics—rank among the top 1% globally in Essential Science Indicators (ESI), with engineering and materials science ranked among the top 1‰.
