The Beijing Academy of Quantum Information Sciences (BAQIS) is a new-type research and development institution initiated by the People's Government of Beijing Municipality in response to the city's strategic goal of building itself into a "National Center for Science and Technology Innovation". It was jointly established with several of Beijing's top-tier academic institutions.
Founded on December 24, 2017, BAQIS operates under the supervision of the Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission. Its founding president was Xue Qikun, Vice President of Tsinghua University and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
The academy's Phase I campus is located in Zhongguancun Software Park in Haidian District, Beijing. It offers a world-class research environment and is in proximity to leading institutions such as the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Peking University, and Tsinghua University, providing a strong talent and innovation ecosystem.
BAQIS is committed to advancing the frontiers of quantum physics and quantum information science, while addressing national strategic priorities in quantum technologies. Through institutional innovation and resource integration, it brings together Beijing's strengths in quantum matter science, quantum computing, quantum communication, quantum materials and devices, and quantum precision measurement. The academy aims to build a comprehensive experimental and R&D platform, attract top global scientific talent and research teams, and undertake major scientific and technological missions. Its goal is to generate groundbreaking original innovations and establish itself as a nationally strategic scientific force that drives coordinated breakthroughs and leads future development.
Aligned with Beijing's role as a "National Center for Science and Technology Innovation", BAQIS actively undertakes the development of national laboratories and participates in major national initiatives such as the "Quantum Communication and Quantum Computing" program under the Science and Technology Innovation 2030 Agenda. It is dedicated to achieving breakthroughs in forward-looking basic research and pioneering original discoveries.
By attracting, cultivating, and bringing together high-level talent in quantum information science, BAQIS continues to advance cutting-edge research in quantum matter science, quantum communication, quantum computing, quantum materials and devices, and quantum precision measurement—striving to become a world-class research institution.
